Preparing for the Holidays: A Guide to Embrace the Season with Purpose and Hope Hi Friend, I know that the holidays can be really tough. For many of us, Christmas can feel like a time when we’re supposed to be surrounded by loved ones, but instead, it feels like we’re more alone than ever. Maybe you're in a similar situation I once was—feeling overwhelmed, lonely, and isolated. It’s hard to feel the holiday spirit when you’re just trying to make it through the day. Looking back, I realize that during the hardest times, I didn’t know how to reach out for help or create a community for myself. I didn’t know that I could have actively prepared for the holidays in a way that would have made me feel more connected, less isolated, and even joyful. I want to share with you some things that I wish I would’ve done back then, so you don’t have to feel the same loneliness. These are small but powerful steps to help you prepare for the holidays if you're feeling like I did—like everything is overwhelming and you're alone. I hope that by following some of these ideas, you can build a sense of purpose and joy in the days leading up to Christmas. 1. Set Aside Time for Yourself It’s easy to feel like there’s nothing to look forward to when you’re on your own, but taking time for yourself is so important. This could be as simple as setting aside a few minutes each day to do something you love. Whether it’s reading, journaling, or even just going for a walk, give yourself permission to take small moments of peace. You deserve that. 2. Look for Local Volunteer Opportunities Sometimes, the best way to get out of a rut and feel connected is by giving to others. Volunteering can bring a sense of purpose and connect you with people in a meaningful way. Plus, there’s something really beautiful about helping others during the holidays—it shifts your focus away from your own struggles and reminds you of the good you can do. Even if you have limited resources, there are plenty of opportunities—many ministries and local organizations need extra hands around the holidays. Consider helping at a food bank, a shelter, or even a Christmas meal drive. It doesn’t have to be huge, but it can be a way to start building connections with people and feeling less alone. You might even make a friend or find a group that shares your heart for giving. 3. Connect with Others Online If you're feeling disconnected from your community or unsure about leaving your home, online support groups and faith-based communities can be an incredible way to stay engaged. Many groups meet virtually over the holidays, and this could be a way to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. If you’ve never tried online volunteer opportunities, they exist, too! There are organizations that need people to help with virtual outreach, writing letters, or doing small tasks from home. Just a little connection can make a world of difference in how you’re feeling. 4. Take a Class or Part-Time Job for the Season I know it can be hard to get out of the house sometimes, especially if you’ve been home a lot. But consider this: a part-time job or seasonal work could be just what you need to shake things up, meet new people, and feel more connected. Even if it’s just for a few hours a week, it can break up the isolation and give you a sense of purpose. If a job feels like too much, maybe a short-term class or workshop can be a good start. There are plenty of community centers and online courses offering affordable ways to learn something new—whether it’s cooking, crafting, or something else that sparks your interest. The goal is to put yourself in a space where you can meet others, learn new things, and even discover passions you never knew you had. 5. Reach Out to Someone You Trust I know sometimes it feels like there’s nobody around, but there might be someone in your life who would love to hear from you. Maybe it’s a friend you’ve lost touch with or a family member who doesn’t realize you’re feeling isolated. If you can, reach out and let them know what you're feeling. You’d be surprised at how many people want to offer support if they just knew you needed it. It might be difficult, but taking that first step to reach out can feel like a huge relief. Even a short conversation or a message can remind you that you’re not really alone—there’s always someone who cares. 6. Plan Something Special for Yourself Lastly, think about what you can do for yourself that would bring joy. Maybe it’s treating yourself to a favorite meal, going to see a holiday movie, or even buying yourself something small that will bring you comfort. Planning small celebrations for yourself is a wonderful way to embrace the season, even when it feels like everything around you is difficult. --- Reflection Time: Preparing for Your Peaceful Christmas If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about what steps to take, consider the following questions: What small acts of kindness can I do for myself during the holiday season? Who can I reach out to—whether online or in person—to feel more connected? Is there a volunteer opportunity nearby that would bring me purpose? How can I create space for peace and healing in my life this season? The holiday season doesn’t have to be about perfection or being with a crowd—it’s about finding your own moments of peace and connection. You are not alone, even if it feels that way sometimes. There’s always hope, and there are always ways to make the holidays work for you. Finding Your Light: Lessons from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer As we enter the holiday season and reflect on thankfulness, I want to share a story we all know, but maybe haven’t thought of in this way before: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Rudolph was different. He had something unique about him that others didn’t understand—his red nose. This difference caused him to be rejected, laughed at, and isolated. But what makes Rudolph’s story so powerful is that the very thing people laughed at—the thing that made him feel unaccepted—became his greatest strength. When the fog rolled in, and everyone else’s abilities were limited, Rudolph’s red nose was the gift that saved the day. --- Rejection Doesn’t Define You—Your Gifts Do Survivors of trauma often know the sting of rejection. During the holidays, when we’re supposed to feel joy and togetherness, those feelings of isolation can become even stronger. Like Rudolph, you may have felt rejected or misunderstood because of what you’ve been through. Maybe your strength, resilience, or voice hasn’t been accepted by others. But I want to remind you of something important: just like Rudolph, you have a gift. You have something special inside of you that makes you uniquely you, even if it hasn’t been recognized yet. Maybe you’ve already started to discover your gift this past year as we’ve journeyed together, or maybe it’s still unfolding. Either way, don’t let rejection blind you from seeing the gifts you possess. --- Prompts for Your Vision Board: Embracing Your Strengths As we head into this season of reflection, let’s take some time to think about what we’re thankful for—specifically, the gifts we each have. If you haven’t made a vision board yet, now is a great time to start. Your vision board will help you see, in a tangible way, the dreams and goals you have as you continue your healing journey. If you’ve already started one, let’s add to it with some new prompts. Here are some questions to consider as you think about your vision board: 1. What is something unique about you that others may not understand, but that makes you stronger? Like Rudolph’s nose, what is your light? What is your gift that shines brightly, even if it’s misunderstood? 2. What strengths have you discovered in yourself this past year? Think back on your journey. How have you grown? What qualities have surfaced that you are proud of? 3. What dreams do you have for yourself moving forward? As we move through the holidays and into a new year, think about where you’d like to see yourself a year from now. What hopes do you have for your healing, your relationships, and your future? 4. What are you thankful for in this season? Even in the midst of healing, what small or large things can you be thankful for today? Gratitude is powerful and can help ground you when the weight of rejection or trauma feels overwhelming. --- Flying Through the Fog Rudolph didn’t know that his difference—his glowing red nose—would one day be what others depended on. His gift led him to shine brightly, even when others had cast him aside. Your journey might feel lonely at times, and rejection may feel overwhelming, but know that you, too, have something powerful within you. The gifts you’ve been given, the lessons you’ve learned, and the strength you’re discovering are all part of your healing. You are capable of flying through the fog, just like Rudolph did. This holiday season, let’s reflect on how far we’ve come. Let’s remember that rejection doesn’t define us—our gifts and our strength do. It’s hard to look around and see blessings when you’re healing from trauma. But even in the midst of pain, there are moments—small and quiet—that we can still be thankful for. The song "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack offers a message of not just surviving but embracing life’s moments with gratitude, even when life has tried to break us down. It’s about choosing to dance, to not sit life out, no matter how difficult the journey has been. --- Choosing Gratitude in the Midst of Healing For survivors, the idea of dancing might not always seem possible—yet. But what if we took a moment to look around at the things we take for granted? It could be the warmth of the sun on your skin, the sound of laughter from someone you love, or even the strength it took to get out of bed today. These moments, while small, are reminders that life holds beauty even in our darkest times. We often think of gratitude as something big, but healing teaches us to notice the smallest victories. Maybe you’re thankful for the friend who checked in on you, or for the space you’ve created to finally take care of yourself. Maybe it’s the quiet strength you’ve found within—strength you didn’t know you had. --- Gratitude Prompts for Survivors Here are some reflections that might help as you begin to notice the things to be thankful for, even as you’re healing: What is one thing you’re thankful for today, no matter how small? Even in pain, is there a moment that brought you peace or comfort today? Who has supported you on this journey, and how can you express gratitude to them? It could be a friend, a family member, or even a therapist. Gratitude can be found in the people who remind us we’re not alone. What inner strength are you grateful for? Maybe it’s resilience, maybe it’s the courage to seek help, or the decision to show up for yourself each day. --- Learning to Dance Again In the song, Lee Ann Womack sings, “I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.” For survivors, this lyric can be a reminder of how healing is both personal and bigger than we sometimes feel capable of. Life moves forward, and in time, we begin to rediscover joy. Dancing doesn’t mean forgetting our trauma—it means allowing ourselves to live in the beauty of life again, bit by bit, as we heal. You may not be ready to dance today—and that’s okay. But healing is about trusting that one day, the dance will come. It’s about being thankful for the moments that bring us closer to that day. --- A Gratitude Challenge As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, take a moment each day to notice one thing you’re thankful for. It could be something as simple as the way the light falls through your window, or the fact that you’ve made it through another hard day. Write it down. Keep a list of these small blessings. The Scorpion and the Frog: Understanding Predators and Protecting Yourself As survivors of trauma, we are often put in situations where we have to navigate trust. We want to believe that others have good intentions, that they won't hurt us, and that maybe we’re overreacting by being cautious. But just like the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog, some people have harmful intentions that cannot be negotiated with or reasoned away. In the story, the frog wanted to believe the scorpion wouldn’t sting him because it would mean they would both drown, but the scorpion’s nature was to sting. This is why it’s important for survivors to understand the nature of predators. Predators, whether they present themselves as charming, trustworthy, or even helpful, often carry hidden intentions that can be destructive. When we ignore the signs or second-guess our instincts, we put ourselves at risk. Just as the frog learned too late, trusting a predator can lead to harm, regardless of the promises or reassurances they offer. --- Why You Should Never Negotiate Your Safety Your safety is non-negotiable. Predators are skilled at manipulation. They can convince you that your fears are overblown, that they’re trustworthy, or that they’ll change. But just like the scorpion in the fable, their actions often reveal their true intentions. Protecting yourself is about understanding that you never have to put yourself in harm’s way to “prove” anything to someone else. You don’t owe anyone access to your trust or your space if they have shown signs that they don’t respect you or your boundaries. Here are some key reminders to keep in mind when it comes to your safety: Trust your instincts: If something feels off or uncomfortable, it probably is. Your intuition is a powerful tool that helps you stay safe. Don’t ignore it. Set clear boundaries: Boundaries are essential in protecting yourself. If someone doesn’t respect your boundaries, that’s a sign of a deeper issue, and it’s okay to walk away. Don’t be afraid to say no: Whether it’s someone pressuring you emotionally, physically, or mentally, your “no” is valid. You never have to justify your decision to protect yourself. Recognize manipulation: Predators often use manipulation to gain trust, whether it’s through guilt, charm, or trying to make you feel like you’re overreacting. Stay alert to these tactics. Surround yourself with support: Having people in your life who respect your boundaries and support your safety is essential. Trusted friends, counselors, and advocates can help reinforce your sense of security. --- Safety Tips for Survivors Here are some safety tips to keep in mind as you move through your healing journey: 1. Have a safety plan: Whether you're meeting someone new or navigating a difficult situation, have a safety plan in place. This could include sharing your location with a trusted friend, meeting in public spaces, and setting up check-ins. 2. Know the warning signs of predatory behavior: Look out for red flags such as someone dismissing your feelings, trying to rush your trust, not respecting your boundaries, or showing controlling behaviors. 3. Use technology to your advantage: Keep your phone charged, share your location, and have emergency contacts easily accessible. There are also apps designed for personal safety that can send alerts if you’re in danger. 4. Practice self-care and self-awareness: Staying grounded and connected with yourself helps you stay in tune with your instincts. Regular check-ins with your emotional and physical well-being can alert you to danger early on. --- Seeing Things Clearly and Protecting Yourself Just like the frog in the fable, it’s crucial to see people and situations for what they truly are, not what we hope or wish them to be. We often want to believe that others can change or that they mean well, but protecting ourselves means staying clear-eyed about the intentions of those around us. Healing from trauma doesn’t mean being naive—it means learning to protect ourselves while also embracing the hope and strength within us. You have the right to feel safe. You have the right to protect yourself from harm. And most importantly, you don’t have to negotiate your well-being to keep someone else happy. Reframing the Dream: Turning the Impossible into Possible Dear Survivor, Healing from trauma is often a journey that feels like a battle against impossible odds. It’s easy to get lost in the memories of broken dreams—the aspirations and goals we had before our lives were changed. But here’s something important to remember: Just because the dreams you had before might feel shattered doesn’t mean your ability to dream again is over. Your dreams are not impossible. They might look different now, but they are still possible. In the iconic song, “The Impossible Dream”, the lyrics say: “To dream the impossible dream,To fight the unbeatable foe,To bear with unbearable sorrow,To run where the brave dare not go…” These words reflect the struggle we often feel in the midst of our deepest pain. Sexual assault can steal dreams, leaving survivors feeling like they’ve been robbed of their hopes for the future. It’s easy to feel as though the dreams we once had—whether they were career dreams, relationship dreams, or personal growth goals—are now out of reach. But here’s the truth: Healing itself is a journey of reclaiming dreams. It’s about reframing the impossible into something attainable, finding purpose in the midst of the pain, and realizing that even broken dreams can be made whole again. Reframing Dreams: Finding Purpose Beyond the Pain 1. Acknowledge the Pain, But Don’t Let It Define You: It’s normal to feel grief for what’s been lost in the wake of trauma. That’s okay. But don’t let the pain become your identity. Your dreams can still evolve. They can take new shape, based on what you’ve learned through your experiences. The old dreams may have faded, but new ones can be born—dreams of healing, growth, and hope. 2. Shift the Focus from Perfection to Progress: Sometimes, we dream about things that feel "perfect" or "complete." The journey to healing, however, is about progress, not perfection. Think of it this way: The dream isn’t about getting it “right” every time—it’s about moving forward step by step, even when it feels hard. You don’t have to have it all together today, but you can make progress every single day. Healing is progress. 3. Take Action Toward New Dreams: When our original dreams feel out of reach, we can still make small steps toward creating new ones. They might not be the same as the dreams we once had, but they can be just as meaningful. Perhaps your dream now includes peace, empowerment, new relationships, or a greater sense of self-worth. Start with small steps: practicing self-care, setting achievable goals, or even just taking a moment each day to reconnect with your body and your mind. 4. Healing Is Part of the Dream: Healing itself can become part of your new dream. You have the power to reclaim your life, even when the path is difficult. Each day you continue to fight is a victory, and it’s one step closer to realizing the dreams you have yet to discover. 5. Believe in a New Vision for the Future: You are not limited by what happened to you. The future is still wide open, filled with possibilities you may not even see yet. Your worth is not tied to the trauma you’ve experienced. You have the right to create new dreams, to build new hope, and to shape a future that feels meaningful to you. Reflection Prompts for Survivors: 1. What are some dreams that feel impossible to me right now? Can I reframe them in a way that makes them feel more possible? 2. How can I start to build new dreams, even if they look different from what I imagined before? 3. What is one small action I can take today to move closer to a dream I thought was lost? 4. In what ways can I start to see healing itself as a dream worth fighting for? 5. How do I redefine progress in my journey, knowing that each small step is part of a larger, meaningful change? A Prayer for New Dreams: “Lord, I come before You with the dreams I thought were lost.I surrender the hurt, the pain, and the confusion,and I trust that You have a purpose for me still.I ask for the courage to dream again,to believe in a future that is shaped by Your love and grace.Help me to see new possibilities for my life,and to take steps towards healing and wholeness.May the impossible become possible through You.Amen.” Closing Thought: Dreaming again after trauma doesn’t mean pretending the past didn’t happen—it means finding the courage to hope again, even when things feel uncertain. Your dreams aren’t over. They may just look different than you imagined, but they’re still worth fighting for. You are still worth fighting for. As you take your healing journey, remember this: You are not defined by the trauma you’ve endured. Your dreams can evolve, your hope can grow, and you can start again.
