Overcoming Fear: Moving Through Difficulties

When I think about the fears I’ve had to overcome in life, one of the most vivid memories comes from my childhood. I remember attending summer camp, a place that was supposed to be fun, but for me, it became a source of anxiety. One day, I ventured too far out into the lake. Suddenly, I went under the water, and I couldn’t reach the surface. A stranger, someone I didn’t know, had to come to my rescue. The feeling of being overwhelmed by something I couldn’t control stayed with me, and it was just the beginning.

Soon after that, I found myself in another scary situation. I got caught in a wave during another water activity, and once again, I needed help. After these experiences, I developed a fear of water. Whenever there was a swimming activity or a water exercise, I would do everything I could to avoid it. I created a habit of running from my fears, avoiding situations that triggered my anxiety. This pattern stuck with me for years, especially as I got older.

I didn’t realize that the fear I carried from those childhood experiences had begun to affect other parts of my life. It wasn’t just about water anymore; it was about avoiding difficult situations altogether. I had a habit of not completing tasks or following through, always stopping short when things got uncomfortable.

Facing the Fear

But one day, I decided I needed to make a change. I joined a water aerobics class as an adult, and this time, I chose to face my fear instead of running from it. I knew that I couldn’t keep hiding from something that had once made me feel helpless. So, I shared my fear with the class and the instructor—being vulnerable about my anxiety was the first step in healing.

At first, I stayed close to the shallow end, clinging to the edge of the pool. But slowly, as I kept returning, I felt more comfortable. The more I practiced, the more confident I became. I learned how to float, how to hold my breath underwater, and eventually, I moved to the deep end. There were moments when anxiety still crept in, but I reminded myself that I was safe, that I was growing, and that I could do this.

The Power of Moving Through Fear

What I learned from this experience is that fear doesn’t need to control us. The key is to take small steps and allow ourselves the time to grow, just as I did with the water aerobics class. It’s not about becoming perfect; it’s about continuing to move forward, even when it feels hard.

Whether it’s a fear of water or any other challenge, we can break things down and tackle them one step at a time. Each small victory—whether it’s a stroke, a breath, or just a moment of courage—is worth celebrating.

Encouraging Growth: One Stroke at a Time

Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen. Just like learning how to swim, we all have the capacity to move through our fears, one step at a time. The important thing is that we don’t give up on ourselves. Even when the waters seem deep and overwhelming, we are capable of finding our way to calmer shores.

---

Enclosure from the Founder

As we navigate our fears, we can’t forget that we are always learning and growing. The journey isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up for ourselves every day, even when the waters seem too deep to handle. Keep moving, keep trying, and know that every step forward is a victory. You are stronger than you realize.

With compassion and encouragement,

Kathe'rine

Founder of Sparrows of Hope

Misconception #1: Non-Profits Don't Make Money

One of the most common myths about non-profit organizations is that they don't make any money. In reality, non-profits can generate significant revenue. The key difference is how they use the money. Instead of distributing profits to shareholders, non-profits reinvest their earnings back into their mission-driven activities.

Revenue Streams for Non-Profits

Non-profits often have diverse revenue streams, including:

Donations from individuals and corporations

Grants from government and private foundations

Income from services or products

Membership fees

Misconception #2: Non-Profits Are Run Solely by Volunteers

Another widespread belief is that non-profits rely exclusively on volunteers. While volunteers play a crucial role, many non-profits employ full-time and part-time professionals who bring expertise and continuity to the organization.

The Role of Volunteers

Volunteers are invaluable to non-profits, but they often complement the work of paid staff. Together, they help achieve the organization's goals more effectively. This combination ensures that non-profits maintain quality and consistency in their services.

Misconception #3: Non-Profits Have No Accountability

Some people assume that non-profits lack accountability because they are not profit-driven. In truth, non-profits adhere to strict regulations and standards to maintain their tax-exempt status. They must demonstrate transparency and accountability through detailed financial reporting.

Standards and Regulations

Non-profits are required to file annual reports, such as the IRS Form 990, which provides a comprehensive view of their finances and operations. This ensures they operate with integrity and remain accountable to their donors and the public.

Misconception #4: All Non-Profits Are the Same

It's easy to lump all non-profits together, but they vary widely in mission, size, and impact. From small local charities to large international organizations, each non-profit addresses unique challenges and serves distinct communities.

Diversity in Non-Profit Sector

Non-profits can focus on a range of issues, including education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and more. Understanding their specific missions helps donors and volunteers choose where to contribute effectively.

Misconception #5: Non-Profits Don't Innovate

Finally, there's a misconception that non-profits are stagnant and resistant to change. In reality, many non-profits are at the forefront of innovation, developing new strategies and technologies to fulfill their missions more efficiently.

Embracing Change

Non-profits often lead in social innovation, from implementing cutting-edge technologies to adopting new fundraising models. This adaptability allows them to address evolving societal needs effectively.

Myth-Busting: Common Misconceptions About Non-Profit Organizations

Reflecting on July and Welcoming August: A Time for Growth

As we step into the month of August, it's a perfect moment to reflect on the work we've done over the past month. July has been a month of celebrating our independence, focusing on self-care, and reinforcing the importance of our physical and emotional boundaries. We’ve talked about safety plans, recognizing triggers, and applying lessons from our personal growth journeys. Now, as we move into the next chapter, we’re not just continuing on; we’re growing with purpose and intention.

Reflections on July:

In July, we focused on celebrating our independence—true freedom that comes from understanding and honoring our boundaries. We emphasized how important it is to create a "safety plan" for ourselves when faced with emotional triggers. Just like we practice fire drills to know how to respond in times of crisis, we learned to prepare ourselves for the moments when our emotions feel overwhelming.

As we reviewed physical boundaries, we also recognized that our time, attention, and energy are just as valuable. The balance between caring for others and caring for ourselves is delicate, but it’s one we’re learning to master. This is where we start to really thrive—by knowing when to say “no” and when to take a step back to reconnect with ourselves.

We’ve also discussed how important it is to apply what we’re learning in real time. Much like baking a meatloaf—where you take the time to mix the ingredients, shape them, and bake them—we must take our lessons, incorporate them into our lives, and allow them to “cook” and “set” in the right way. It's about moving forward with a clear sense of what we’ve gained and how we’re ready to apply it.

Looking Ahead to August: A Month of Renewal

Now, with August before us, we enter a new phase—a time for renewal, reflection, and deepening our understanding of ourselves. It’s a time for taking what we’ve learned and making it real in our day-to-day lives. We’re entering a season of transformation, where we can let go of what no longer serves us and make room for new habits, healthier boundaries, and a stronger sense of self.

August is often a time of fresh starts—whether it’s the last stretch of summer or preparing for the fall months ahead. It’s a great time to focus on what we want for ourselves. Just like the days grow longer in the summer, we have the opportunity to let our self-awareness and emotional well-being grow deeper and stronger as we approach the second half of the year.

A Time for Growth and Embracing What’s Next

As we embrace August, let’s reflect on the importance of continuing to grow in our self-care, embracing new opportunities for growth, and learning how to apply our boundaries with confidence. We’re all learning that as we honor our physical, emotional, and mental boundaries, we create space for new beginnings—space for healing, space for joy, and space for possibility.

---

Enclosure from the Founder

As we journey into August, let’s keep in mind that growth is ongoing. It’s not just about what we learn, but about how we apply it in our daily lives. Together, we’ve learned to celebrate our independence and embrace our boundaries. Now, it’s time to take what we’ve discovered and step into this new month with confidence, knowing we are prepared to handle whatever comes next. May this month be one of continued healing, growth, and an unwavering commitment to our well-being.

With warmth and encouragement,
Kathe'rine
Founder of Sparrows of Hope

---

Does this reflect what you were envisioning for the transition into August?

Corporate Partnerships and Sponsorships

Building More Than Houses

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Tulsa is more than just constructing homes; it's about building hope and transforming communities. Whether you're a seasoned builder or a novice wanting to make a difference, the impact you can have is profound. Volunteers from all walks of life come together to help families achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable housing.

The Power of Community

One of the most remarkable aspects of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is the sense of community it fosters. Volunteers often find themselves working side by side with the families who will live in the homes, sharing stories and creating bonds. This collaboration strengthens ties within the community, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the construction site.

Through teamwork, volunteers learn new skills and develop a deeper understanding of the housing challenges faced by many. This shared mission not only builds homes but also cultivates a spirit of unity and compassion.

Empowering Families

For the families involved, the experience is life-changing. Habitat for Humanity provides them with a hand up, not a handout. Families partner with volunteers and contribute “sweat equity” by working on the construction of their own homes. This process instills a sense of pride and ownership that is invaluable.

Moreover, these new homeowners gain access to affordable financing, educational resources, and support systems that help them thrive long-term. The stability of a secure home environment allows families to focus on pursuing education, improving employment opportunities, and enhancing their overall quality of life.

Personal Growth and Fulfillment

Volunteers often find that the experience transforms their own lives as much as those they are helping. Engaging in meaningful work and witnessing the tangible results of their efforts can be incredibly fulfilling. Many volunteers report feeling a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude.

Additionally, volunteering offers the chance to learn new skills or hone existing ones, from carpentry to project management. These experiences can be both personally and professionally enriching, adding value to one's life far beyond the construction site.

How to Get Involved

Getting involved with Habitat for Humanity in Tulsa is easy. Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to a regular schedule, your contribution will make a significant impact. Here are some ways to participate:

Join a build day to help construct homes.

Volunteer in the ReStore to support fundraising efforts.

Offer professional skills, such as accounting or marketing.

By taking part in these activities, you not only help build homes but also support the broader mission of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Conclusion: A Lasting Impact

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Tulsa is a rewarding experience that leaves a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the families they assist. Through hard work, compassion, and collaboration, lives are transformed, and communities are strengthened. The rewards of volunteering extend far beyond the immediate benefits, fostering a legacy of goodwill and empowerment for generations to come.
